# EU Employment Law

EU employment law updates can affect recruitment, employee consultation, reporting procedures and supplier contracts at different times. This section brings together selected developments relevant to employers, HR and European and local Works Councils, with the next milestone and a practical preparation action for each topic.

An EU Directive normally requires national implementing legislation in each European country. A proposed local in-country start date remains conditional until the relevant legislation and commencement arrangements are confirmed in that country. An adopted EU Directive is not necessarily fully applicable for a country. Entry into force means the instrument has become law; an application date identifies when specified requirements start to apply.

Employers should therefore check the legislation and commencement dates in each country where they operate, alongside the EU timetable.
