5 Ways to Increase Employee Engagement and Job Satisfaction.

Job satisfaction, employee satisfaction or work satisfaction is a measure of workers’ contentedness with their job and whether they like the job or individual aspects or facets of jobs, such as the nature of work or supervision. Job satisfaction can be measured in cognitive, affective, and behavioural components. Find 5 ways to increase employee engagement.

Job satisfaction is a crucial factor for a successful business. It plays a key factor in reducing absenteeism and employee turnover.

1. Delegate, Trust and Let Go

It is often difficult for entrepreneurs and managers to give employees more responsibility. Delegate some work and give employees confidence that they will succeed in their work.

The benefit might be that employees will actually develop better methods or find new means for innovation, which the company can desperately use in these times.

2. Employee Engagement – Express Shared Values

Part of the company culture is sharing values and behaviours with employees. Make sure employees are familiar with the core values and principles of the company. Defining and communicating these values should be beyond just the mission and show the bigger picture, including responsibility for environmental issues.  Values might be:

  • ‘we are honest and sincere’
  • ‘we trust each other’
  • ‘we stand for sustainability’

With core values like these, the company is expressing: be good to each other and, therefore, good for the company, its customers and suppliers. This stimulates more employee engagement and pleasure to work in the company.

3. Offer Time for Relaxation at Work

It is essential, that it’s not all about work and no play. Find alternative ways to offer employees relaxation at work, without distracting others too much. Examples could be, games or relaxation exercises and areas.

4. Define Individual Goals, Team Goals and Company Goals

Provide individual goals, team goals and company goals. Make sure to celebrate, reward and recognise an employee when a milestone is achieved. Make sure to have a rewards and recognition programme in place to not only provide top-down recognition, but also peer-to-peer recognition.

5. Share Company Policy and Employee Procedures

There is more employee engagement if rules, regulations and procedures are clear and defined in employee policies. This includes policies around a safe and healthy working environment, sick leave regulations, training and development opportunities.
